Twelve

One month later…

“Shit,” Kai whispered.

She tapped on the screen, trying to figure out why her period was late. According to her period tracker, she should’ve gotten her cycle a week ago. Yet, there hadn’t been any signs, and Kai was concerned.

Sex had become a normal routine in her marriage with Eli. She’d wake up to dick and be put to sleep by it. After thinking about all the positions he’d contorted her body into, Kai wasn’t surprised she had yet to see a period. Unfortunately, she wasn’t ready for that phase of their marriage and cursed herself for not being on some type of birth control.

“Maybe I'm not though,” she said. “I have been stressed.”

Even that wasn’t enough to convince her that she wasn’t pregnant. So, Kai decided after having lunch with Nicole, she would stop and pick up a pregnancy test. Kai finished applying mascara to her lashes and slipped her feet into some sandals. After she was satisfied with her appearance, Kai left the house and headed toward St. Parklynn where she would be meeting her mother.

Pulling into The Fiftieth One, she valeted her truck and entered the restaurant. Right away, she spotted Nicole near the window sipping on some tea.

“Hey, Mama,” she greeted, placing her purse on the table.

Her eyes lit up as she rose from her seat. “Hey, I've missed you.”

The hug was so endearing, they held the position for minutes longer. Although they spoke often, Nicole had given Kai space since the wedding so she could spend time with Eli.

Kai pulled back. “How are you?”

“I'm fine,” Nicole chirped, taking a seat. “Trying to get some things in order for myself.”

Kai sat across from her. “You seem to be in good spirits after filing for divorce. I don't know, I guess I was expecting a little sadness.”

“Girl, I feel like a burden has been lifted from my shoulders. I'm no longer being woken up by stress. Or having to argue with your father about his gambling. I've really been stress-free these last couple of months. Looking back, I can’t believe I was living in those kinds of conditions. It’s crazy to think about.”

Kai loved that her mother was in good spirits, but she hated the circumstances surrounding it. Logan was depressed, and Nicole was relieved. Kai felt torn.

“That’s nice, Mama. So, where are you guys in the divorce process?”

“We have court at the end of the week. I'm hoping we can get this financial situation worked out because I'm not going to be responsible for his debt. I don't want to pay a dime for his decisions. I just want him to take responsibility for it so I can move on with my life.”

“This is crazy. I never imagined you guys not being together.”

Nicole snorted before taking a sip of her tea. “Listen, your brothers think I'm doing the right thing, and I would hope you’d feel the same way, Kai. I know you love your father, and I do too, to a certain extent, but he hasn’t been good to me in the last five years,”

“Honestly, Mama, I'm torn.
